The Performance Gap
So what prevents Performance from reaching it's full Potential? What causes the Performance gap? What is the missing link?
Tim Gallwey, one of the founding fathers of Executive Coaching and author of the Inner Games series uses a simple equation to explain the gap:
Performance = Potential - Interference (P=p-i)
When your people have the Potential but not the sales Performance, then you need to look at Interference.
A common mistake made by most sales managers is trying to increase the Potential further. If the Potential is already there then this is a waste of valuable time! You must unlock what you've already put in place!

Interference is present in everybody, either consciously or unconsciously. It shows itself as inaction, discomfort, avoidance or hostility. Do you recognise these attributes? It can be simply avoiding tasks we find uncomfortable or people who we don't feel comfortable with. Or, if we can't avoid those tasks or people, then Interference causes discomfort, weakness and ultimately poor Performance in these areas.
